Belfast is the capital and largest city of Northern Ireland. It sits on the River Lagan, has a population of just under 300,000 and is a major port.
Belfast was a centre of the Irish linen, tobacco processing, rope-making and shipbuilding industries: in the early 20th century, Harland and Wolff, which built the RMS Titanic, was the world's biggest and most productive shipyard.
The city suffered greatly during the conflict called ‘The Troubles’ but latterly has undergone a sustained period of calm, free from the intense political violence of former years, and these days enjoying substantial economic and commercial growth.
Belfast is served by two airports: George Best Belfast Airport in the city, and Belfast International Airport 15 miles (24 kms) west of the city.
The Titanic Quarter was recently voted the world’s leading visitor attraction.
Belfast is a city that knows its sport. In 2014 the city turned pink for the Giro D’Italia bike race.
